Was going through some Institute stacks of Disney magazines in search of a bit of research for a future DHI essay. I came across a stack of 1930s Mickey Mouse Magazines, and sort of got lost in the moment, flipping through the pages and enjoying the color lithography that was so prevalent during the Depression era. Striking! So thought Institute readers would enjoy seeing some of these as much as I do. This full-page ad for the company Walt saved is on the inside front cover of the October 1937 issue. It is truly a thing of beauty. Enjoy!

Interestingly, I just found out that George Kamen, nephew of Kay Kamen, who had been sent to Europe around 1934 to head up the London office, left Disney for Ingersoll in 1938.
ReplyDeleteThat "$3.95 price is equivalent to around $63 today, so... not as cheap as it might seem!
ReplyDeleteSomewhere in my closet I have a 1930s ingersol that still works. Or it did last time I checked, which was a while ago. $63 is a bargain for a watch that will work 70 years later. I sort of suspect that if you paid $63 for a character watch (of any kind) today, you'd be lucky if it was still working five years from now. :)
