Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse prepare for a sled run at Lake Arrowhead, California in January of 1933. Much has been written of Walt’s love for skiing and the many 1930s winter vacations that were a result of this passion (and a doctor’s note suggesting that Walt needed to get more rest and relaxation time). Easily the most photographed of these trips was this January 1933 trip where Walt’s traveling companions included not only his beloved wife Lillian, but also this fantastic Charlotte Clark Mickey Mouse doll. There are a handful of well-circulated photos from this trip (primarily Walt and Mickey in a staged skiing accident; Walt and Lillian in a staged sledding accident; and an image featuring a very lucky young girl, Mildred Chanter, who won a snowman building contest). I’ve had this photograph in the Institute’s collection for many, many years (back in the Persistence of Vision days),  and so to me, it “seems” common … however in asking around, I believe this photograph is rarely seen (if ever, that is until now). (It is possible this photograph is from a later 1935 trip.)
Enjoy!
