November 18, 1962 and the opening of the Swiss Family Treehouse. On the
steps leading to the Treehouse entrance is Kevin Corcoran, Walt Disney, and
Swiss Consul Max Robbi who just presented the flag of Switzerland to fly
over the Treehouse.  The joke goes that the Swiss Consul had to present the
flag, because in 1959 when the Matterhorn opened, the Disneyland Purchasing
Department accidentally ordered a Swedish flag (similar, with a cross, but blue
and yellow, rather than red and white). The flag flew majestically for two days
over the Matterhorn before the mistake was noticed. Here, four years later,
the problem was prevented by asking Switzerland to send somebody with the
correct flag. Now you know the rest of the story.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:  Once again, I would like to offer up my sincere thanks to my very good friend “the magnificent” Ed Ovalle from the Walt Disney Archives. I was having trouble chasing down the name of the Swiss consul, and within minutes (seconds) Ed had the answer for me. As always, his assistance has been invaluable.
Thank you Ed!
